Those who venture out to the County of Kent’s eastern shores for golf are drawn there by two historic courses with royal designations. The most famous of these, Royal St. George’s Golf Club, was the first course outside of Scotland to host the Open Championship in 1894. The course’s traditional layout is defined by stunning vistas, though it is also known for its difficulty. On the 4th hole, that difficulty takes the form of the largest bunker in the UK, one set into a 40-foot-tall dune that can wreak havoc on the scores of players who find themselves deep within its grasp.

Less than three miles to the south, Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club offers visitors its fast-rolling fairways that have welcomed golfers (including members of the Royal Family) across three centuries. In the north, Prince’s Golf Club represents a marriage of historic and modern golf, as the club now features three, 9-hole courses—The Shore, The Dunes, and The Himalayas—that were built or redesigned after World War II. However, all of the original course’s 18 greens are still in use.
