East Lothian & East Coast Scotland

Just to the east of Edinburgh, an overlooked utopia for Scottish golf patiently awaits avid players and enthusiasts to discover it. Unlike some of Scotland’s other regions, which are home to numerous contemporary Open Championship venues (or courses that have recently hosted Scottish Opens), East Lothian boasts only one. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers more widely known as Muirfield Golf Club, which has welcomed The Open 16 times, the British Amateur on 10 occasions, and the Ryder Cup in 1973. In fact, Jack Nicklaus completed his first career grand slam at Muirfield in 1966 and later described it as “the best golf course in Britain.”

Less than four miles from Muirfield, at North Berwick Golf Club, visitors can traverse fairways that amble along the North Sea shoreline and marvel at the course’s 15th hole, home to the original Redan green—one of the most imitated green complexes in all of golf and one that most enthusiasts consider to be an architectural masterpiece.

Just down the coast from North Berwick, Dunbar Golf Club is defined by a heritage that dates to 1856, even though the Dunbar Golfing Society—one of the oldest recorded golfing organizations—played on the other side of town more than six decades before. On the opposite side of North Berwick, The Renaissance Club is a sparkling new gem of private golf that opened in 2008; while Gullane Golf Club, which began its life as a members-only facility in 1882, today welcomes visitors every day of the week.
