Prepare for thrilling golf, breathtaking beauty and bracing seaside air.
1. Ardglass Golf Club
Ardglass is golfing on the edge, literally.
Your first five holes play along clifftops and set the stage for an exhilarating round of golf. The signature 2nd – ‘Howd’s Hole’ – calls for a carry across the coast to a craggy inlet.
And the fun never stops.
Ardglass skirts the shoreline and provides glorious views of the Irish Sea from every hole. Wild elevation changes and hungry bunkers only add to the excitement.
Ardglass is also home to the world’s oldest clubhouse. The building dates back to 1405 but now offers some of the finest Guinness and seafood served in the 21st Century.
Did we mention Ardglass is only a short drive from our next course in the charming seaside town of Newcastle?
2. Royal County Down
Royal County Down is as spectacular to behold as it is exhilarating to play.
Just ask Golf Digest.
This classic links course nestles in the foothills of the magical Mountains of Mourne. The sweeping views across Dundrum Bay, the Irish Sea and Slieve Donard never fail to amaze.
However, the tricky layout at Royal County Down will soon demand your full attention.
Old Tom Morris’ original design did not lose any eccentricity after Harry Vardon and Harry Colt modified it.
Blind tees, deep bunkers, rumbling fairways and deceptive greens can wrongfoot even the most strategic golfers.
But Royal County Down is always a joyous experience. And you’ll struggle to find more scenic holes than the 4th and 9th.
3. Castlerock Golf Club
There are signature holes, and then there is the ‘Leg O’Mutton’ at Castlerock Golf Club.
The 4th hole on the Mussenden Course is a 200-yard gauntlet between a railway line and meandering steam to an elevated green.
But don’t be surprised if a sudden Atlantic wind whips off the Causeway Coast to spoil your parade.
Set in Coleraine, County Derry, Castlerock is a beautifully quilted links where the River Bann meets the Ocean.
Master architects Harry Colt and Martin Hawtree have perfected the layout since its foundation in 1901.
The result of their efforts is an exquisite, must-play coastal course on any golf trip to Northern Ireland.
4. County Louth (Baltray)
The best-kept secret in Irish golf hides in the Boyne Valley.
County Louth Golf Club, also known as Baltray, is a sensational championship links without a single weak hole.
According to Donald Steel, Baltray belongs in the same ‘exalted company’ as Royal Portrush, Lahinch and Ballybunion.
The course unrolls across a magical stretch of rugged terrain north of Dublin on Ireland’s Ancient East.
Shane Lowry, Darren Clarke and J.B. Carr all won as amateurs at Baltray.
It’s an epic layout. One outstanding hole after another meanders through imposing dunes and soaring sandhills towards the heaving Irish Sea.
Needless to say, we couldn’t recommend County Louth Golf Club enough. Also, you can pair it with our final course for a 36-hole day to remember.
5. Seapoint Golf Links
Seapoint Golf Links only opened in 1995. But this rugged par-72 gem in County Louth has quickly become a championship venue of some renown.
Seapoint staged The OFX Irish Legends in 2023 and 2024. The club will also host the prestigious Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open in 2025.
The course runs through 260 acres of tumbling linksland along the sublime shores of Termonfeckin Beach.
Bring every shot in your locker to navigate the blinds, bunkers, roughs and fast-breaking greens set against the wind-whipped Irish Sea. And brace yourself for a rousing back-nine few other courses can match.
You’ll soon see why Seapoint is now a regular fixture in Irish Golfer Magazine’s Top 100 Courses.
