Set on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course is an Old Tom Morris links of rare authority, known for its plateau greens, natural running ground and No. 2 place in Golf Digest’s 2024–2025 world ranking.
Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course occupies a pure strip of linksland on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, where firm turf, natural contour and ever-present wind shape every shot. Opened in 1892 and attributed to Old Tom Morris, it remains a touchstone for natural links design rather than a manufactured championship test. The course plays to 6,799 yards, par 70, and is defined by its elevated plateau greens, which ask for precise distance control and confident recovery play. There is little excess here: the strength lies in the routing, the running ground, and the quiet difficulty created by angles into the greens.Â
Its standing is reflected in a No. 2 place in Golf Digest’s 2024–2025 world ranking, yet the appeal is not about status alone. Royal Dornoch endures because it feels inseparable from its Highland setting, with the firth alongside and a rhythm that still reveals more on every round.
