Set beside the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, North Berwick’s West Links is a historic seaside course of rumpled fairways, stone walls and famous green complexes, with Ben Sayers’ influence and enduring Open qualifying pedigree.
North Berwick’s West Links occupies a singular place in the game. Opened in 1832, it is Scotland’s oldest surviving links and still feels gloriously individual. The course sits hard by the Firth of Forth, where rumpled ground, revetted bunkers and old stone walls create holes of uncommon character. Ben Sayers’ influence helped shape a layout that prizes imagination over brute force, and few courses have contributed more to golf architecture.Â
The par-71 course measures 6,420 yards, yet its challenge lies in angles, wind and the originality of its greens. The Redan remains one of the most copied par threes in golf, while the Pit is among the most memorable targets anywhere. North Berwick has also served as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open, underlining its competitive standing. This is a links of ideas and personality, not formula, and all the better for it.
