Turnberry’s Ailsa Course combines championship pedigree with one of golf’s most recognisable coastal settings. Opened in 1901, reworked by Martin Ebert in 2016 and host to four Open Championships, it plays beneath the lighthouse with constant reference to Ailsa Craig and Arran.
Turnberry’s Ailsa Course has long held a singular place in Scottish golf, combining championship stature with a stretch of coastline that feels unmistakably its own. Opened in 1901, the course was originally laid out by Willie Fernie and later transformed by Martin Ebert in 2016, a redesign that strengthened its modern championship profile while sharpening its connection to the shore.
At 7,501 yards and playing to par 71, it is a substantial test, yet its identity lies as much in place as in scale. The Turnberry Lighthouse provides one of the game’s most recognisable focal points, while views towards Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran accompany much of the round. The Ailsa has hosted The Open Championship four times, giving it rare competitive weight, but it remains memorable for the rhythm of its coastal holes and the clarity of its Ayrshire setting.
