Royal Troon’s Old Course on the Ayrshire coast combines Open Championship pedigree, Willie Fernie heritage, and one of golf’s most recognisable short holes in the Postage Stamp.
Royal Troon Golf Club opened in 1878 and remains one of Ayrshire’s defining championship links. Associated with Willie Fernie, the Old Course pairs a measured outward half with a stern inward nine that typically turns back into the prevailing wind, asking for control, shape, and patience. Its most famous moment comes at the 8th, the Postage Stamp, a tiny par 3 whose scale belies its capacity to unsettle even elite players.
Open Championship history gives the course its stature, but the character lies in how subtly the test builds through the round. Fairways appear straightforward, then angles tighten, turf firms up, and misses become progressively costlier. At 7,208 yards and par 71, it is a championship course of precision rather than excess. The closing stretch demands exact ball-striking and nerve. Close to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Royal Troon fits naturally into an Ayrshire itinerary alongside Prestwick, Western Gailes, and Dundonald Links.
