Quinta do Lago South is the resort’s flagship layout, opened in 1974 and designed by William Mitchell. Host of the Portuguese Open, it combines classic championship pedigree with a parkland setting defined by umbrella pines, water hazards and views towards the Ria Formosa.
Opened in 1974, Quinta do Lago South is the flagship course at Quinta do Lago Resort and one of the central Algarve’s established championship venues. William Mitchell’s design moves through umbrella pines, lakes and the edge of the Ria Formosa, creating a parkland course with a distinctly local sense of place. At 6,488 yards, par 72, it asks for control rather than force, with water, well-placed hazards and shifting angles shaping many of the key shots. The course’s Portuguese Open history adds competitive pedigree, but its appeal also lies in how naturally the routing sits within the resort landscape. Views towards the Ria Formosa give the round a different texture from inland Algarve layouts, while the overall design retains the measured, classic feel of an earlier resort era. South remains the headline course here today, balancing tournament credentials, polished presentation and a setting that is unmistakably Quinta do Lago itself.
