Set on the Aberdeenshire coast, Royal Aberdeen’s Balgownie Course is a historic links shaped by Archie and Robert Simpson, later refined by James Braid, with Walker Cup and Scottish Open pedigree.
Royal Aberdeen’s Balgownie Course has occupied its present links at Balgownie since 1888 and remains one of Scotland’s most exacting traditional seaside tests. Designed by Archie Simpson and Robert Simpson, then strengthened by James Braid, it plays as a par 71 at 6,916 yards across firm, natural links terrain on the Aberdeenshire coast. The course is especially known for its outward nine, a stretch that has long shaped Balgownie’s reputation and gives the round its distinct character. That championship quality is reflected in a tournament record that includes the Walker Cup and Scottish Open. There is little excess in the design; the examination comes from the ground, the line from the tee, and the need to control flight through changing coastal conditions.
Ranked No. 56 in Golf Digest’s 2024–2025 list, Balgownie blends deep Scottish golfing heritage with a stern, enduring championship identity that has rewarded precise play for generations.
