Opened in 1894 and originally laid out by Willie Park Jr, Portstewart Strand Course has evolved into one of the most distinctive modern links on the Causeway Coast. Its defining character lies in the opening stretch, where fairways thread through vast, natural dunes that rise sharply from the Atlantic edge. Later refinements by Des Giffin introduced a more contemporary championship flow, balancing visual drama with strategic clarity.
The course gained international recognition when it hosted the 2017 Irish Open, confirming its ability to test elite players while remaining engaging for visitors. Elevated tees, rumpled fairways and exposed greens ensure constant interaction with the coastal elements. As the round progresses, the terrain softens slightly, offering variety without losing intensity. Portstewart’s Strand Course stands apart for its scale, rhythm and the memorable contrast between its bold opening and composed finishing holes.
