Cruit Island Golf Club sits on a small island just off the Donegal coast, offering a nine-hole round shaped as much by the Atlantic as by its design. Opened in 1986 and laid out by Michael Doherty, the course plays to a par of 34 at 2,809 yards, but its modest length is deceptive. Several holes run directly along the cliffs, where misjudged shots can quickly meet the sea below.Â
The routing moves naturally across rugged ground, with greens positioned to take full advantage of the coastline. Wind is a constant presence, often dictating both strategy and club selection. The island setting gives the course a sense of separation and focus, with little beyond the sound of the ocean. Cruit is not about scale or yardage, but about control, creativity and embracing the conditions on every hole.
