Opened in 1923, Sunningdale New Course is Harry Colt’s celebrated heathland companion to the Old. Set among pine, heather, gorse and silver birch, it is admired for smaller greens, strategic bunkering and a championship record that underlines its standing.
Opened in 1923, Sunningdale New Course shows Harry Colt at his most exacting. Routed across springy Berkshire heath, it asks for restraint from the tee and precise placement into small, subtly defended greens. Heather, gorse, pine and silver birch frame the holes without ever feeling ornamental; each feature sharpens the strategy.
Often seen as the sterner counterpart to the Old Course, the New rewards players who shape the ball, control trajectory and accept that position matters more than force. Its championship record reflects that quality, with the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, European Open, Senior Open, Women’s British Open, Brabazon and Final Qualifying all part of its story. Despite its reputation, the course never feels severe, because Colt’s routing gives it rhythm, variety and continual tactical interest.
