Set within the wooded folds of Sintra, Penha Longa’s Atlantic Championship Course pairs Robert Trent Jones Jr. strategy with rolling terrain and tournament history. Opened in 1992, it remains one of the Lisbon region’s standout resort courses.
Opened in 1992, the Atlantic Championship Course at Penha Longa brings Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s strategic eye to the wooded slopes of Sintra. This par-72 layout measures 6,846 yards and uses the site’s natural elevation to create a round that changes pace and perspective from hole to hole. Fairways rise and fall across the hillside, asking for careful club selection and a measured approach rather than brute force. Historic surroundings add a distinctive sense of place, giving the course a character that feels different from the coastal golf found elsewhere around Lisbon. Its championship standing is reinforced by hosting the Portuguese Open in 1994, 1995 and 2010, marking it as one of the region’s established tournament venues. As Penha Longa’s flagship layout, it combines resort polish with a serious golfing test, making it a strong choice for players who value shape, variety and competitive pedigree near the capital.
