Old Head Golf Links occupies one of the most singular settings in Irish golf, routed across a narrow headland that extends nearly two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. Opened in 1996, the course was designed by Ron Kirby and Paddy Merrigan to follow the natural contours of this exposed peninsula, creating a layout where elevation changes and sea exposure shape every shot.Â
Playing to par 72 at 7,150 yards, the course is defined by its sequence of cliff-edge holes, many of which run directly along the perimeter of the headland. The routing constantly shifts direction, ensuring wind is a persistent and strategic factor. Elevated tees, rolling fairways and guarded greens demand precise control. Despite its dramatic setting, the course remains playable and measured, offering a distinctive test that differs from traditional dune-based links while retaining a clear connection to the coastal landscape.
