Carne Golf Links sits on the edge of the Mullet Peninsula, where the land feels open, quiet and shaped almost entirely by wind and sand. When Eddie Hackett arrived here, he found an immense dune system and chose to route the course with a light touch, allowing the natural contours to guide each hole.Â
Opened in 1992, Carne plays to par 72 and carries a sense of space that is difficult to replicate elsewhere in Ireland. Fairways are broad, greens are set naturally into the land, and the movement across the property is constant without ever feeling forced. There is little in the way of distraction here, which adds to the experience. The setting is remote, even by Irish standards, and that sense of distance becomes part of the round. Carne is less about spectacle and more about the quiet satisfaction of playing golf across ground that feels entirely its own.
