The King Robert the Bruce Course brings a newer architectural voice to Turnberry, with Martin Ebert’s 2016 redesign shaping a par-72 championship links across the Ayrshire coast. Coastal holes, exposed ground and views towards the lighthouse give it a distinct identity beside the Ailsa.
Opened in 2016 following Martin Ebert’s redesign, the King Robert the Bruce Course gives Turnberry a modern counterpoint to the Ailsa while standing firmly on its own golfing merit. The layout runs across the Ayrshire coast in bold fashion, using rumpled ground, exposed links contours and long views towards the lighthouse to create a course of scale and movement.
At 7,203 yards and playing to par 72, it is built for championship golf, yet its appeal lies as much in the rhythm of the routing as in its length. Holes turn inland and back to the sea, asking for control in the wind and clear thinking from the tee. As part of the wider Turnberry experience, it broadens the destination’s appeal, offering a newer architectural expression without losing the coastal character that defines golf at this corner of southwest Scotland. It sits naturally beside Ailsa, rather than in its shadow.
