Some people in the hospitality sector see the temporary slump in their industry as an opportunity as much as a challenge. Indeed, this St Patrick’s week, Carr Golf Travel, The K Club, The Dromoland Collection and Tourism Ireland joined forces to showcase their wares in India. At the heart of this trip is the recognition that golf is the fastest growing sport in India and is the game of choice for the increasing number of affluent Indian business people and professionals. Aligned to this is the increasing number of Indians who are now travelling frequently to European destinations.

“India offers great potential for the Irish Golf Market with over 30 million Indians projected to travel overseas in 2010 and golf being the fastest growing sport in the country. There is already strong recognition of Ireland as a premium golf destination and our intention is to build on this. From our meeting with government officials we are heartened to learn of advanced negotiations to secure direct flights from India to Ireland” according to Marty Carr CEO of Carr Golf Travel.

The highlights of the week include hosting two major golf days for 120 participants in both KGA Golf Club in Bangalore and DLF Golf Club in Delhi, recent venue of the Avantha Masters on the European Tour. In addition to the on course events there are numerous trade lunches and sales calls in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. This busy trade mission will then culminate with a dinner hosted by the Irish Ambassador to India Kenneth Thompson.
